FAQs

HushMat is and always has been 100% manufactured in the United States of America.
There is no performance difference between the Silver and Black Ultra.. The only difference is the black ink applied to the aluminum foil to provide a non-reflective surface. Both Silver and Black Ultra perform identical in all testing.

Yes we do. We have extensive experience in all forms of transportation vehicles including RV’s. You will need one product to treat road noise – HushMat Ultra. We recommend application of HushMat Ultra to the firewall, doghouse, front driver & passenger floor to reduce road and tire noise. We also recommend treating the generator cabinet, plumbing and your stainless-steel sink with HushMat Ultra. This creates quiet when you are off-the-road. If is road noise from the rear tires that concerns you – you will need to cover the rear wheel well housings and rear floor with HushMat Ultra.
We recommend the combined treatment with HushMat Ultra and HushMat Silencer Megabond foam.

Noise enters the interior of any vehicle in two ways – Noise enters the chassis (aka structure) of the vehicle and all parts connected to it. Low Frequency Noise (aka vibration) in the range of 0-1000 Hz and is treated by vibration damping material – HushMat Ultra sound deadening. We recommend covering 60% of the metal panels surrounding the interior i.e. firewall, floor, roof, doors, truck, rear quarter panels, trunk floor and trunk lid. Apply Ultra beginning in the center of the panel and work toward the outer edges again covering at least 60% of the panel surface. Furthermore if you want to the appropriate amount of material for your vehicle visit our Year, Make & Model look up on our home page to search for your vehicle. We have taken the guesswork out of “how much HushMat do I need for my car?”

The second path noise enters a vehicle is through the air. Airborne noise sources are road & tire, wind, exhaust drone and engine noise. This is High Frequency Noise most of which is well above 1000 Hz frequency. This noise must be absorbed. Silencer Megabond is a blend of synthetic rubbers with variable cellular structure formulated for optimum sound wave absorption in automotive, transportation and marine environments. Silencer Megabond is a semi-closed cell foam that absorbs sound waves up to 6000 Hz frequency.

The combination of HushMat Ultra and Silencer Megabond offers you the optimum performance to quiet any vehicle on the road today. This combination has proven to reduce noise by up to 15 decibels.

The only prep we recommend is lightly dampen a cotton cloth with water (not dripping) and rub over the surface to remove dust or dirt. Allow the area to dry to the touch – then peel and stick HushMat. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND USING SOLVENTS, ACETONE OR ALCOHOL BASED CLEANERS.
The treatment for effective heat reduction is 100% surface coverage. Any void – even 5% will allow a majority of the heat to transfer into the interior of the vehicle. You will get both outstanding heat and sound reduction from one HushMat material – HushMat Ultra. Our Year, make and Model kits are designed for 100% surface coverage so you get the benefit of both sound and thermal insulation.

HushMat Ultra is a compounded blend of butyl rubbers formulated specifically for low, room and high temperature properties. HushMat is 1.5mm thick offers significantly higher density that competing products. Hushmat weighs 0.47 pounds per square foot. This product advantage allows us to provide a product that is significantly more flexible, easier to install and dramatically higher in performance.
HushMat Ultra SILVER is paintable. HushMat Ultra BLACK is not paintable. The Ultra black finish is not compatible with all paints.
HushMat Ultra’s proprietary formula is the adhesive. HushMat’s formulation requires no glues or film adhesives like other brands. HushMat Ultra has passed over 30 years of rigorous in-vehicle validation of performance in every climate on the globe. This is one of the competitive advantages of HushMat.
Once you adhere a sheet of HushMat Ultra to a surface you have 2-3 minutes of time to pull the sheet off and re-apply it. After 3 minutes the molecular bond begins and you will have difficulty removing the material. HushMat Ultra is made to stay adhered to your vehicle for its entire life. Even in overhead or vertical surfaces in the hottest of climates – HushMat stays bonded to the vehicle.
Damping is the physics that converts vibration energy into heat. The HushMat Ultra is formulated to dissipate (reduce) this energy and absorb it into the material at any temperature below 550 degrees F (288C). This dramatically reduces the vibration energy and the noise that comes from it. The key product characteristics of damping materials are:

Adhesion at all operating temperatures
Conformance/Flexibility
Weight/Mass

HushMat leads the industry in performance. HushMat provides superior adhesion from -30 to 550 degrees F. HushMat is more flexible than competitive brands, even in freezing temperatures, and no heat guns nor special tools are required. HushMat is 1.5mm thick however density provides optimum 0.47 pounds per square foot performance. The competition likes to say their product is “thicker” however this measure by itself is not relevant to product performance.
HushMat is the brand of automotive, truck, marine and home vibration damping (not “dampening”), thermal insulation, tape and sound absorption materials formulated to eliminate noise. HushMat materials also reduce heat from engine, exhaust and sunlight. HushMat materials are the easiest materials to apply.
dB stands for decibel. It is the physical measure for sound. The decibel scale is a logarithmic scale. This means a 5 dB SPL reduction equates to a 70% reduction in sound power in the noise. A 10dB reduction in SPL equates to a reduction in sound power by a factor of 10! The human ear recognizes a 2-3 dB change. The interiors of stock automobiles, trucks and RVs are well above 80-90 decibels at 65 mph. 80 decibels of noise are like having a vacuum cleaner or paper shredder on your passenger seat turned on! Fatigue and stress is heightened when driving to and from work at these noise levels. HushMat has been proven to lower these noise levels by over 50%.
Street rods, hot rods and muscle cars and your daily driver vehicle have significant heat that enters through the firewall, floor pan, tunnel and roof. There are several areas on a vehicle interior that experience above average temperatures. The firewall, tunnel, floor pan and roof are all areas that heat enters the vehicle. HushMat Ultra is 1.5mm & 0.47 pounds per square foot density to provide an excellent treatment for these application areas. “Spot treating” only a small area does not reduce the heat. A 5% gap in coverage will allow 80% of the heat to transfer through.

For extra thermal protection apply ½” Silencer Megabond directly on top of HushMat Ultra on the firewall, tunnel and trunk floor for optimum thermal insulating performance. Apply ¼” Silencer Megabond to the back of the removable door panels and the back of the headliner for extra insulation from heat. HushMat Ultra is specified to perform at up to 550 degrees F.

HushMat Hoodliner can be applied to the engine side of the firewall, hood and front quarter panels.
HushMat Silencer foam should be applied to the following areas:

- ¼” back of the removable door trim panel with foam facing outer skin of door
- ½” under carpet adhered directly on top of HushMat Ultra on firewall, tunnel and floor,
- ½” or ¼” under trunk fabric directly on top of HushMat Ultra, and rear wheel wells,
- ¼” above the headliner adhered to fiber board or backing of headliner,
- 1/8” on the back of all loose plastic trim panels, console or glove box to eliminate annoying rattles.
HushMat Ultra is designed specifically for this problem. Simply remove the license plate from your vehicle and place the HushMat Ultra sheet on the back of the plate. Trim it if necessary with a pair of scissors. Place the treated license plate back on the vehicle. Your problem is solved every time with HushMat.
Our efforts in the Automotive Industry over the past 30 years have shown dramatic reductions. Due to the number of variables outside our control – we cannot dictate exact decibel reductions in your vehicle. We do offer 30 years of experience reducing noise and heat in hundreds of thousands of vehicles worldwide. It is not uncommon for a vehicle with complete HushMat surface coverage to achieve up 10-15 dB reduction of noise.
HushMat Year, Make & Model kits are pre-sized. We have spent countless hours measuring vehicles. We have learned most vehicles have undergone significant sheet metal variation from their original stock production over their life. In addition, a 5% gap in surface coverage allows 80% of the heat to transfer into the vehicle interior. This would be like insulating the wall in your home and leaving the window open.

We provide various size pieces or sheets and a template for placement with every Year, Make & Model kit. These pieces in aggregate require minimal trimming and insulate 100% of the vehicle surface for both heat and sound.

In addition, we add 5% additional square footage of material as it is common for someone to miss-apply a piece. This allows the you the customer to finish the job.
